Overview

This document describes how to install the IAPWS IF-97 add-in for Excel on a Windows PC running Excel 2007.  The IAPWS IF-97 add-in is an Excel 97 – 2003 format add-in file based on the X Steam v2.6 workbooks by Magnus Holmgren (http://www.x-eng.com). This add-in has been digitally signed with a self certified digital signature. This digital signature will allow the add-in to function under Excel’s high security mode if the proper configuration steps are taken.  You may also choose to reduce Excel’s security for add-ins and bypass further Excel configuration.  Both approaches are outlined below.  This Add-in will also work with earlier(Office 97 – 2003) versions of Excel but the installation procedure will differ from the one documented here.  It has been tested with Excel 2003 and 2007 on PCs running Windows XP Pro SP2.

Installing the Add-in

To install the add-in simply copy the IAPWSIF-97Add-in.xla file to the Add-ins folder on your PC.  This folder is found within the Documents and Settings folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\Microsoft\Add-ins

Where USER is the user name you use to log on to the PC.

Once the add-in is installed, you can choose to load it automatically or add it and remove it as needed by taking these steps:

1.       Click on the Office Button and press the Excel Options Button as shown below:

2.      Click the Add-Ins entry on the Excel Options Dialog box as shown below:

3.      Set the Manage: Drop Down List Box to Excel Add-ins and press the Go… Button to display the Add-Ins dialog shown Below:

Click the Check Box to the left of the Iapwsif-97 entry to add it and click OK.  Uncheck the check box to unload it.

4.      If your Excel 2007 installation is configured with High Security for add-ins you will see the following prompt when you clock the OK button on the Add-Ins dialog box:

To enable the Add-ins macros you must either install and trust the add-in’s digital signature or reduce Excel’s add-ins security level.  The remaining steps show how to install and trust the add-ins’s digital signature.  See the next section for instructions on how to reduce Excel’s add-ins security level.

5.      Click the Show Signature Details Link to display the Digital Signature Details dialog box:

6.      Click the View Certificate Button:

7.      Click the install Certificate… button to start the Certificate Import Wizard:

Click next and go through the Wizard accepting its defaults to install the Certificate.  Click Yes when the following Security warning is displayed:

Click OK on the various dialog boxes opened during the certificate installation process to dismiss them.  You will then see the following Message box:

Click the Trust all from publisher button.  You should now see the following message box when the certificate installation has been completed successfully:

8.      The following splash screen will be displayed for one second when the add-in loads successfully:

9.      The IAPWSIF-97 add-in will now be automatically loaded each time you start Excel until or unless you clear its check box on the add-ins dialog box in step 3.

10.  If you do not properly configure the digital certificate or if you choose to disable the add-in’s macros you will see the following Security Warning In Excel’s tool bar area

The steam property functions and workbooks that use them will NOT work if the add-in is disabled.

Lowering Excel’s Add-In security Level

Follow these steps if you prefer to Lower Excel’s security level (not recommended) instead of installing and trusting the IAPWS-IF97 addin’s digital signature

1.      Click on the Office Button and press the Excel Options Button as shown below:

2.      Select the Trust Center Entry and then click on the Trust Center Settings… button:

3.      Click on the Add-ins Entry and clear the “Require Application Add-ins to be signed by Trusted Publisher” check box as shown below:

Click OK.  The IAPWSIF-97 add-in can now be loaded without installing and trusting its digital signature by following steps 1 – 3 of the Installing the Add-In section above.
